y current painting practice celebrates iconographies of female social culture and performance. I use theatrical gestures and a glittery, saturated palette to present a colourful and aggressive yet whimsical interpretation of femininity within a contemporary context. The montage of imagery and painting styles in my work is intended to be a staging of the overlapping cultural influences that define this sense. My research is based on feminist gender identity theory (Judith Butler), especially the artifice and exaggeration of camp sensibility (Susan Sontag); on societal attitudes toward stereotypes of beauty and girlhood (Marina Warner); and on the association of colour with the feminine throughout art history (David Batchelor). |
